What kinds of photo opportunities should I expect?
Muir Woods National Monument offers some of the most unique photo opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area for photographers. As one of the closest redwood forests to San Francisco, the towering redwoods create dramatic vertical compositions, especially along the Muir Woods Redwoods Creek Trail.
The heavily-filtered light through the forest canopy offers perfect conditions for capturing the serenity of Northern California’s old-growth redwoods. The misty forest is also home to several rare animal species, as well as lush ferns and mosses. To get the best shots, arrive early at the national monument to capture the best light and fewest crowds.
What should I bring to tour Muir Woods?
When touring Muir Woods, it’s a good idea to bring multiple layers, since the cool, misty mornings may call for a jacket. Wear sturdy shoes that will keep you comfortable on the wet trails, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect you from sun or dripping water.
Bring a device to take photographs — either a camera or a phone — but keep in mind that tripods aren’t allowed in Muir Woods National Monument.
How long does it take to tour all of Muir Woods?
Most visitors spend 1.5-2 hours at Muir Woods, but it could take 3-4 hours to hike all of the trails. Muir Woods has a 6-mile network of well-maintained trails, many of which are flat and wheelchair-accessible. Others are steeper and more challenging.
Most tours allow enough time to walk the Redwood Creek Trail from the Visitor Center, which can be done as a 0.5-mile, 1-mile, or 2-mile loop. Take the Redwood Creek loop to Bridge 3 and visit the best sites in the park in about 60 minutes.
How long does it take to travel from Muir Woods National Monument to Northern California’s wine country?
It takes about one hour to travel by car or bus from Muir Woods to wine country. Both Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley are a similar distance, but travel time can vary based on traffic and your specific destination in wine country.
When you take Extranomical’s redwoods and wine tour, the guides will keep everyone entertained so the time flies by quickly! The trip back is relaxing and makes a stop for photos at the Golden Gate Bridge before dropping you off at your downtown hotel.
