Experience legendary giant redwoods, among the largest and most ancient trees in the world. Travel to charming seaside Sausalito, packed full of things to do. As a private tour, you set the pace and have some flexibility.
Here is a typical private, Muir Woods and Sausalito experience.
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge in Route to Muir Woods
Begin with a morning crossing of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. On your way to the Muir Woods, your private guide will share the history of the region, and explain why it is that Coast Redwoods have such long lives.
Stroll Redwood Creek Trail Under Ancient Redwoods
After entering serene Muir Woods, you will enjoy guided audio narration (eight languages) as you follow the meandering nature trail through the ancient Coast Redwood protected by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, some over 250 feet tall.
We’ll help you be on the lookout for northern spotted owls, deer, lady bugs and 13 species of ferns that have been on earth for more than 300 million years as you study the redwood canopy above you.
Browse and Dine in Seaside Sausalito
After your time in Muir Woods, your guide will head to Sausalito, a seaside community full of charm and unforgettable views of San Francisco. You’ll have time to browse the charming shops and have lunch.
One Last Bridge Photo on the Return to SF
After our excursion in Sausalito, we will make our return trip back to San Francisco but not before a stunning southbound jaunt across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Great customer service!
I would give Extranomical Stars. The bus driver was kind enough to drop me, my wife, and my mother-in-law with bad knees straight to our hotel after the tour. Great customer service!!! Thank you for a great experience!!!

Awesome tour guide!
We took the morning Muir Woods tour and it was great! Phil was an awesome tour guide - he was very knowledgeable about San Fran and its history; plus, he was funny and kept us entertained. He stopped at the GGB so we could take some awesome photos on a clear, sunny day before getting us to Muir Woods before 9 so we could get in free. Muir Woods was beautiful - picture and words can do it justice. We had about 1.5 hours there before stopping in Sausalito on the way back for about 30 minutes. While we weren't there long, we were happy with the 30 minutes to bask in the sunlight while sitting on the water (we could have chosen to stay longer and take the ferry back to SF, but we had plans for the afternoon). We can't give Phil enough praise. If we ever make it back to San Fran, we will definitely use Extranomical Tours again - and, we would want Phil to be our guide!

Exactly what I wanted
I really enjoyed the half day Muir Woods tour to Sausalito. Lars was a great guide, friendly and punctual and provided great commentary on the neighbourhoods we drove through, across the bridge and on to Muir Woods. Even though I've been to San Francisco quite a few times, I still learned lots of new things! We even squeezed in a Golden Gate Bridge photo stop! Before we got to Muir Woods, Lars gave us lots of information about the area and when we got there we had almost a full 2 hours to walk around the woods on our own - note though, we each had to pay $10 admission to enter the woods, it's the new Muir rules. After the woods, we went to Sausalito where you could get the ferry or drive back with Lars into the city. If we headed back into the city, we had about 45 minutes in Sausalito which was plenty of time for a quick bite or a stroll up and down the main street. Lars was kind enough to drop me off exactly where I wanted to go in Fisherman's Wharf which was much appreciated. The tour was exactly what I wanted with Muir Woods, a taste of Sausalito and a value added tour guide!

Highly recommend tour!
We had a great lunch at Scoma's (recommended by Steve) with views overlooking the bay. You can take a ferry ride back into San Francisco. We highly recommend the AM Muir Woods Tour, the price was also very reasonable.

Highly recommend tour!
My husband and I had a great morning tour of The San Francisco area, heading into Muir Woods, Steve was an awesome tour guide.
Our last stop was Sausalito, a beautiful city on the water, we had the option to stay there the rest of the afternoon. I recommend that option if your schedule allows. We had a great lunch at Scoma's (recommended by Steve) with views overlooking the bay. Plus there is great shopping in the city. You can take a ferry ride back into San Francisco. We highly recommend the AM Muir Woods Tour, the price was also very reasonable. --

Surprise detour!
Our Muir Woods tour guide was Ross and he picked us up on time, was extremely friendly, and had great tidbits of extra information for us along the way. Ross took us on a "surprise" detour to a lookout point so that we could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. The tour itself was great; we had about 2 hours to ourselves in the woods early in the morning (which was great because by the time we were finishing up, it was becoming crowded), then we headed to Sausalito for lunch with the option to stay longer and take a ferry back on our own. While on the tourbus Ross gave us background and useful information, and then once we were in the woods or in Sausalito we were given our own free time to explore at our leisure

Super easy to book
Tour was super easy to book and communicate with staff. My boyfriend and I did the bus tour to Muir woods from the Zaphry hotel and then elected to book a ferry from Sausalito back to Pier 39. We parked in the pier 39 parking structure (cost $60) and then walked to the hotel. Our tour guide, Tammy was amazing! Super fun and made the trip! Had about 1 hour and 40 minutes to enjoy Muir woods. Highly recommend. We had to change plans last minute for pickup and the staff easily assisted us without issue. Had a great time!!

Excellent tour guide!
Our tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and very amusing. Kept us entertained throughout. Well worth it. I also recommend the ferry trip back from Sausalito to San Francisco. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge. All in all an excellent tour. The Woods of course speak for themselves! Not enough time spent in them is the only downside of the day.

Great trip to a gorgeous place!
Great trip to a gorgeous place. We didn’t realize the return trip included an hour and 1/2 stop in Sausalito which was plenty of time to walk around and take photos. Also the stop to take pictures of the GG Bridge was outstanding. Jerry, our driver/guide provided interesting commentary and recommendations along the way. All in all, a most enjoyable day trip.

I planned a team event and my team had a wonderful time! Josh was great every step of the way and super proactive - he took the time to check in with me afterwards when a few bumps came along on the road (he was on top of refunding ferry tickets without me asking or reaching out and when the # of people who showed up on the van weren't consistent with what I booked, he called me to let me know). It shows Josh truly cares about what he does and wanting to ensure customers have a lovely experience. I would love to work with Josh and you all again for future bookings - thank you!!! (:

Very easy as long as you stay on the main Redwood Creek trail. The loop trail to Bridge 3 is a bit less than two miles on a mostly paved and flat walkway.
-
Muir Woods can be chilly in the morning and is nearly always shaded by the forest canopy. It’s best to dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes or sandals. High heels or flip-flops are not recommended. Bring along a waterproof top layer in case of rain.
-
Bring a valid government-issued ID, camera or phone, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, umbrella (if the forecast calls for rain), and cash or a credit card for snacks and souvenirs.
-
Meals are not included. Picnics are not allowed in the park. There is a small café just inside the entry gate but it is best to have a meal before the tour so you don’t spend precious time standing in line for food. This itinerary offers a stop for lunch in Sausalito (not included in the tour price).

Muir Woods is extremely popular and officials strictly limit the time for visitors. You will spend about 1.5 hours exploring the ancient redwoods and other endangered creatures along Redwood Creek trail.
-
If you return to San Francisco in the tour vehicle, you will have approximately an hour in Sausalito. If you’d like to spend more time in Sausalito, there is an option to return to Pier 41 in San Francisco on the bay ferry.
-
Sausalito is a picture-perfect spot for lunch and there are several restaurants on the bay’s shore where you can enjoy a meal during the hour-long stop.
