Which location in Fisherman's Wharf attracts over 11 million visitors a year? Surprisingly, the answer isn’t Alcatraz, but it its neighbor, Pier 39. The bayside complex of retail shops, attractions, restaurants, and docks is one of the most visited attractions in the region.
There are a variety of family-friendly restaurants from which to choose and many of them include stunning vistas of the bay and its bridges. (For the best clam chowder on the wharf, try Fog Harbor Restaurant)
As you walk through the pier, you will also encounter over-the- top candy stores, mini-donuts, crepes, waffle cones, cotton candy, caramel corn, and cookie dough, too! If you want to get out on the water, there are bay cruises, whale watching trips, wine-tasting voyages, catamaran rides, and sailing trips that depart from Pier 39’s private marina. To keep the kids entertained, there is a 7-D attraction, arcade, a merry-go- round and the Aquarium of the Bay.
Last but not least, the K dock of Pier 39 is famous for its boisterous sea lions, who moved there from the Seal Rocks in the late 1980’s. They make themselves available for free every day. To learn more about them, you can visit the Sea Lion Center on the second level of the pier.
