Half Dome Hike

Half Dome Hike is a fabulous hiking adventure for those in shape and looking for a challenge. Half Dome is nearly 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and 8,800 feet above sea level. It is a 14-16 mile round-trip hike, so be prepared to take at least 10 hours to finish the hike. The ascent up the cables is where you will be pulling yourself up with your arms. Only a 2x4 every 10 feet or so to rest. Climb up the two metal cables during the last 400 feet before you reach the summit.

Along your journey will be spectacular, one-of-a-kind views of Yosemite National Park. Amazing sights include Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap, and of course Half Dome. You will also get a chance for 360-degree views at the top of Half Dome, overlooking Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra. Look for squirrels, steller's jays, chipmunks, and look out for black bears! Half Dome Hike can be a risky yet exciting and memorable experience.

As you plan your Half Dome hiking adventure, be sure to apply for a permit to hike to the top of Half Dome. Permits are vailable by lottery during the hiking season. The daily lotteries have an application period two days prior to your hiking date. The permit consists of a fee per application as well as a fee per person and only a maximum of 400 hikers are allowed on a single day on the Half Dome Trail. To apply for a permit, visit Recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777.
