Yosemite National Park has been awarded a federal stimulus grant in the amount of $4 million dollars for a photovoltaic power system. The system is expected to generate 80,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year reducing energy consumption by 12% and saving roughly $100,000 a year. Construction will begin next month at the El Portal installation site where panels will be added to already existing building rooftops and newly designed shade structures.

The El Portal site was chosen because of the amount of sunlight it receives and its location, on the south western side of the park near the Merced River. Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent has stated that "This project demonstrates Yosemite's commitment to sustainable and renewable energy resources ", and hopes to expand the project in the future.
