San Francisco museums and tourists attractions have offered free admission to residents and locals throughout the year attracting large numbers of people to multiple city venues. While this program was successful and used often by residents, San Francisco attractions quickly became overwhelmed with the number of people taking advantage of the limited free admissions days. During these free admission days most of the city attractions were overrun with the large number of residents attending. In 2009 over 35,000 people visited San Francisco museums and attractions using the free admission days.
This year the city has created a program titled Check Out San Francisco Free Family Pass with the hopes of stretching out the free admission days throughout the year. This program is designed to allow locals to check out a family pass from a city library, which grants 2 adults and 4 children free admission to one city attraction within 7 days of check out date. There are a certain number of passes at each library for each venue and hopefully this will allow more residents to visit local attractions while distributing the visits throughout the year. Some of the attractions offering free admission days through the Check Out San Francisco Free Family Pass program are the MOMA, California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoo.
