The new permit system limiting the number of day hikers and backpackers ascending Half Dome on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays has been sold out for tourists interested in a May or June hike. Yosemite National Park implemented the temporary system after four deaths in four years plagued the mountain. The day permits will limit the number of hikers to 300 per day and backpackers to 100 per day.
Yosemite will be selling the permits, which are free with a $1.50 processing fee, two months in advance. There were 5,700 permits allotted for May and June and two days after the first permit selling date the total of available permits was 69. The next batch of permits serving July 1st through August 31st will go on sale beginning April first and are expected to sell out just as quickly. Yosemite officials were expecting the fast sale of permits and were not surprised at the rate at which Yosemite tourists bought. The final permit batch will be available midsummer and will cover September through October, weather permitting. Park officials want to remind tourists that weekday hikers do not require a permit.
