On June 5th, 2010 Highway 132, stretching through Yosemite National Park from Coulterville to Highway 120, will be dedicated to famous naturalist John Muir. The highway follows the rough path Muir traveled on an early journey into Yosemite. This specific route is described in Muir's book, "My First Summer in the Sierra". The commemoration of the highway will take place June 5th at 11:00 am and include several county officials as well as Muir's great grandson, Bill Hana, who will address the audience as the keynote speaker.
The ribbon cutting ceremony and formal dedication ceremony will follow the keynote speaker and will be presented by Mariposa County Supervisor Lyle Turpin, Tuolumne County Supervisor John Gray and Bill Hana. The ribbon will be cut at the intersection of highways 132 and 49 and a motorcade of vintage cars will proceed up the new John Muir highway. Along with the dedication ceremony Lee Stetson, an expert on John Muir and his journey, will give a reading. This community event is open to the public and more information regarding the dedication ceremony can be found by calling the Coulterville Visitors Center at 209.878.3074 or the Yosemite Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center at 209.962-0429.
