On September 7th, 2009 Dave Uberuaga, acting Superintendent for Yosemite National Park announced that the Big Oak Flat Road and portions of the Tioga Road would be reopening for visitors on September 8th. These roads allow access to Yosemite via Highway 120 from Groveland and had been closed since August 26th due to fires having burned an estimated 7,425 acres, the Big Meadow Fire is now 100% contained.
Despite the reopening, drivers should still use caution when using the road, as there will still be smoke on the road from the fire area. Visitors should be careful to stay within the approved areas since the following campgrounds and trails remain closed: Tamarack and Crane Flat Campgrounds, and Big Oak Flat Trailhead to El Capitan; Rock slides to El Capitan; and Tamarack Creek to El Capitan.
If you are considering visiting Yosemite, now is an ideal time as tours are in full force at the end of the summer. Additionally, the Bridalveil Creek Campground which was slated to close on September 8th will stay open to help accommodate more overnight visitors.
