Three Seniors with Extensive Rescue Work History Aiming for Yosemite Peak and More

Jan
06 2009

Three Welsh volunteer rescue workers - all senior citizens, are planning a round trip ascent and descent in Yosemite National Park at Half Dome in June. The world famous granite rock faced mountain is part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain chain in Northern California and one of Yosemite Valley’s most recognizable landmarks, with a sheer face and a height of almost 9,000 feet.

The ascent to the Half Dome peak rises 4,800 vertical feet, requiring a cable assisted final section at the peak, and the return will result in a thirteen mile trek for the crew. Each of the three men is over the age of sixty and all have been involved in mountain rescue work most of their adult lives, with one hundred and twenty years of experience between them. The purpose of the Yosemite Valley climb is not to highlight their vitality and fitness from their years of mountain rescue service, but to raise awareness and money for three of their rescue associations in Wales. The donations raised for their Yosemite Half Dome ascent will be split evenly amongst Rescue Dog Association Wales, Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, and the North-East Wales Search and Rescue, all of which they have been closely aligned with over their many years of service as mountain rescue volunteers.
