Amazing Yosemite

May
14 2009

During the spring and early summer in Yosemite Valley, a visitor can witness an amazing site.  Lunar rainbows or 'moonbows' can be seen at the base of the upper and lower falls. With just the right conditions the full moon's natural light can reflect through the waterfall mist to create a lunar rainbow.  Over the past several hundred years several lunar rainbow sightings have been made in the Yosemite Valley.  Most notably is John Muir's sighting and recording of the "elusive, ethereal moonbow" in his book, "The Yosemite."

Conditions permitting, a tourist can travel to either of Yosemite's well known waterfalls during a fullmoon and witness a large arc hanging in the mist of the waterfall.  With the unaided eye a lunar rainbow is almost impossible to view since the human eye requires much stronger light to see color, although, with a camera a colorful lunar rainbow can be seen.  There are several places throughout the world where lunar rainbows are a very popular tourist attraction and lunar rainbow tours are a common activity.  Although, for the most intimate personal view of a lunar rainbow Yosemite Valley is the most sought after destination.
