GIS Navigation Improves Yosemite Emergency Response

Jun
29 2009

Yosemite Search and Response (YOSAR) has partnered with ESRI, creator of ArcGIS software, to greatly improve emergency response strategies throughout Yosemite National Park. YOSAR uses ArcGIS to carry out a number of operations including initial search strategies, refined exploration as time progresses and a continuous flow of information from the field to the command post.

ArcGIS is a geographic information system and has allowed YOSAR to create a Yosemite platform that has been successfully used in half a dozen searches in less than a year. The GIS software is used to create information such as search area perimeters, footprints and litter. This system provides real time updates to already existing map data as well as a platform to compare existing data with continuously updated information. Yosemite National Park is a wonderful tourist destination and the parks dedication to the safety of all of its visitors is what makes Yosemite an enjoyable tourist attraction.
