Sweet Wine in Sonoma

May
28 2009

There are few options in Sonoma for Port enthusiasts, but fortunately there is one stop in the midst of wine country where someone with a sweet tooth can satiate their appetite. Sonoma Valley Portwork's specialty is sweet dessert wine and nothing else. Located in Petaluma's Foundry Wharf building this petite winery produces about 4,000 cases of Port, sweet wine and after dinner spirits. The winery is run by owner and founder Bill Reading who can be seen in the tasting room most business days. Reading is more than happy to share his love, knowledge and enthusiasm for his specific blend of wine.

Port, originally from Portugal and made popular during political problems between France and England in the 1600's, is completely unlike any variety of wine. The Port production process calls for halting fermentation at a specified time to add fortified spirits to create an entirely new beverage. Reading has created a very unique process for pressing his fruit which requires soaking the grapes in cold water, using a machine to destem and crush the fruit, and then pressing the fruit by hand or foot. Reading has created a special machine to press his grapes by foot while saving energy and creating a much more interesting activity for wine club member's who are invited to take part in the pressing every fall harvest season.
