Sonoma County Winery Takes Lead in Waste Water Recycling Technology

Jackson Family Wines of Sonoma Valley has partnered with University of California at Davis, winery waste-water specialist Heritage Systems and civil engineering firm Riechers Spence and Associates to create and test a waste water recycling system specifically for wineries. Most water consumed in wineries goes toward rinsing wine barrels, tanks and equipment. The new water recycling process will reduce overall water usage by 70 percent.

The water is recycled through catching and filtering the used water, losing only 10 percent of the water in the process. The procedure also retains 75 percent of the water's heat saving energy as well. This is the first time a highly efficient water recycling process has been seen in the wine industry and many wineries, including those in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, are excited to have the opportunity to use environmentally friendly water consumption methods as well as save energy. The Kendall Jackson winery located in Sonoma Valley will be the first winery to use the newly tested technology.
