Sonoma County to Track Tourism Spending

The Sonoma County Tourism Bureau has volunteered to act as a local liaison for the California Travel and Tourism Commission for a statewide campaign that tracks how tourism dollars are spent. This is part of a statewide effort to emphasize the importance of such spending within local economies. The program named 'Spend Tom', which is a direct reference to Thomas Jefferson, will distribute $25,000 in marked two-dollar bills to various tourism related locations throughout Sonoma County. Each of the bills will be labeled with www.spendtom.com and consumers who end up with a bill can log onto the website and indicate where they received and spent the money. As incentive to participate all consumers who enter the information onto the website will be entered in a drawing for a California vacation.

The Sonoma County Tourism Bureau reported that they were the first county chosen by the California Travel and Tourism Commission to test the program in 2009. During that year over 400 people received bills and reported the bills traveling as far as New York, Florida and Hawaii. California wine country relies heavily on tourism and this campaign will hopefully answer many local economic questions for Sonoma County.
