Possible New Change to Napa Valley Winery Law

Feb
23 2010
Napa Valley

The current Napa Valley Winery Law states that commercial activity shall be restricted in the unincorporated areas of Napa county to protect the rural nature of the county and its historic agricultural preserve. This ordinance affects new wineries which can only offer pre-registered tours and tastings and cannot host non-agricultural events such as weddings. The only wineries that are allowed to host weddings in Napa Country are venues built before 1989.

Recently, a hospitality industry proposal was presented to county supervisors requesting a loosening of some restrictions imposed on Napa wineries. Several wineries joined the proposal effort arguing that the event restrictions imposed on wineries is threatening the overall existence on the wine industry in Napa Country Supporters of the change feel that the lifting of restrictions on wine tastings and tours as well as corporate events and weddings would allow wineries more freedom to market their wines positively affecting the wine industry in the region.
