Napa Valley's Rutherford: In The Middle of Somewhere

Jan
15 2009

You know that you're in the middle of Napa Valley when you hit Rutherford; in fact you're exactly in the middle geographically. It was also at the center of the transition for Napa County, when it began shifting from livestock and the farming of fruits and grains, and moving toward vineyards. John Patchett is most often credited with establishing the first commercial vineyard in Napa Valley in 1858. But it was two years later in 1868 when two now prominent names - Krug and Rutherford, would establish their respective commercial local wineries and really begin to launch the wine industry in Napa County.
