The Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon begins this Sunday, March 7th at 7:00 am. The course winds through wine country on the Silverado Trail, 26.2 miles to Vintage High School. The race organizers expect around 2,300 participants including several Olympians and national title holders. The 32nd annual race is thought of as a fast course and a qualifier for several larger races including the Boston Marathon and the Olympic Marathon Trials.
Many runners hoping for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team will use this race as a training exercise as well as a timed qualifier to add to their record book. The fastest men's time for the race was set in 1987 by Dick Beardsley who ran the course in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 20 seconds. The fastest women's time was completed by Diane Fitzpatrick in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 43 seconds in 1992. With all the elite runners attending this event this race should be one for the Sonoma County record books.
