Wine Country Tours: What's the Deal?

Mar
13 2009

Contrary to the perception of some, wine country tours do not take you to a winery and merely dump you or plug you into one winery for the day with an itinerary for touring that winery's grounds, its vineyard, the wine making facilities, the storage barrels and cave, the home, the barn, the shed, the doghouse, and checking the mailbox. Most wine country tours traverse a particular appellation such as Napa Valley (link) or Sonoma Valley (link) and make stops at three to six wineries over the duration of the tour so that you experience not only various wines and wineries, but also take in the surrounding scenery.

While there is usually an itinerary on most wine country tours, those are usually only structured as to the wineries that you'll be experiencing that day. What you do while at each of those stops is entirely up to you. If you wish for insight into the facilities, the vineyards, the wine making, the history of the property and label, you can join in and have that experience with your own group or join in with others, but you are free to eschew that altogether for your own interests and pace as you see fit. Between the exit time from the tour bus and the boarding time back on the bus to go to the next winery, you are the master of your own domain. It's a regimented or as loose as you desire, so all personalities and sensibilities can find comfort in the experience. But even if you have a natural tendency to avoid groups and guided events, you shouldn't overlook the opportunity to gain a little insight along the way with the experience of your choosing; that's one of the benefits of going on a wine tour, the chance to gain knowledge that you wouldn't otherwise have been exposed to going on your own.

Other aspects of wine country tours that will appeal to almost anyone will be the fact that because you're in a comfortable and large vehicle together, you will be in the constant company of those with whom you've chosen to spend the day with and that's where the fun resides, rather than the constant separation into various vehicles. With a driver you also have no need to plan ahead by scheduling with the wineries, and have no concerns about getting lost or dealing with traffic. Additionally, the wineries will often treat arrivals from wine country tours like VIPs with special attention, insight, and experiences while they're on the grounds. Even if none of that interests you, I should remind you that with a driver you are free to imbibe until your heart's content without fear of repercussions. And if no other aspect of a wine country tour seemed to hold appeal for you, that is something everyone can take interest in, whether for pleasure or safety.
