Vehicles Resume Their Commute Over the Bay Bridge

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge

During the 5 day closure of the Oakland Bay Bridge, for a planned upgrade and seismic check repair, crews found a 2 inch wide crack on one of the eight eyebar links, which called for emergency action. The bridge was originally scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, September 8th, at 5:00 AM but the emergency repair set the reopening back until Wednesday. Most commuters had planned on continuing their alternate transit routes during the unscheduled closure by utilizing BART and other public transit systems. Alternate bridges were also utilized including the Golden Gate Bridge, San Mateo Bridge and San Rafael Bridge.

An emergency repair plan was put in place on Sunday morning and two steel fabrication crews worked over night shifts in order to create the needed parts by Wednesday morning. Surprisingly Caltrans announced that the bridge repair had been completed ahead of schedule and would open at 6:30 AM on Tuesday, September 8th, only 1.5 hours later than originally scheduled. The timely repair was due to the diligent work of two steel fabrications companies from Arizona and Oakland. The Bay Bridge is now able to safely guide 260,000 commuters and tourists into San Francisco each day.
