The San Francisco Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services has released an initiative designed to educate the public regarding disaster preparedness by remembering the Loma Prieta Earthquake in a very unique way. October 17th, 2009 will mark the 20 year anniversary of the massive quake that took the city by surprise and caused major damage to bridges, buildings and roadways. In order to create an educated and prepared community the City and County of San Francisco will host a week long series of events running from October 12th-17th known as The Big Rumble. This event will focus on raising awareness of disaster preparedness throughout the city and county.
One aspect of The Big Rumble is the "Where were you in '89?" Block Party initiative which will be organized in conjunction with several emergency preparedness organization including The American Red Cross and the Neighborhood Empowerment Network. The Big Rumble is offering grants to block party hosts to help with the costs for producing a block party and renting street barricades. Block party registration is due by 5:00 pm on September 23rd and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services encourages early registration by visiting Where Were You in '89? website.
