Gavin Newsom, the Mayor of San Francisco has announced that Sunday Streets will become a permanent program in the city. This program, which closes city streets to cars, was designed to allow residents to utilize the streets with alternative means of transportation. The final event of the year took place on Sunday September 6th and featured exhibits from the California Academy of Sciences and San Francisco Zoo, a human tire pull competition and a bike rental facility.
Sunday Streets originated in 2008 with two events and grew to six events in 2009. The final event took place along the Great Highway near Ocean Beach. Previous events occurred along the Embarcadero, the Bay Trail, the Mission District, and Golden Gate Park.
