The summer solstice is close at hand and one of the most exciting events taking place on the longest day of the year is the Summer Sailstice. The Summer Sailstice is a celebration organized by Sailors for the Sea, a non-profit group dedicated to educating and empowering the boating community to take action by restoring and protecting the oceans and coastal waters. The Summer Sailstice was started in 2001 by John Arndt who wanted to share his love of sailing with the community. The event started with 200 registered sailors and now features over 2,000.
The Summer Sailstice is free to the public and participation ranges from sailing your own vessel, signing up to crew on a boat or enjoying the view of a sail boat spotted bay with San Francisco as the back drop. For tourists that don't want to travel out to Treasure Island, a San Francisco city tour is a great way to experience this amazing event. The beautiful view from Fisherman's Wharf of the thousands of sailboats participating in the Summer Sailstice is a sight to behold. Tourists can also reserve a private city tour and travel out to Treasure Island to experience the event first hand.
