Stimulating Marin

Mar
15 2009

The massive governmental stimulus bill consists of nearly $800 billion in funding with the accompanying omnibus bill adding another $400 billion, but exactly where that is heading, and how it will be parsed, has not been finalized. Marin County has made its case for its share in various infrastructure improvements and anticipates receiving between $5 and $7 million for such when payments are approved. The breakdown will likely be just under $2 million for the improvement of roads, $1 million for employment training, and $2 million for energy conservation and efficiency programs. California state government may add to that by about $700 thousand.

The county’s transportation department which includes the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, is anticipated to benefit by roughly $9.5 million to keep that sightseeing attraction beautiful for the millions who traverse it on San Francisco tours or on their way to Muir Woods tours, as well as the locals which benefit from its utility and majesty. The bus and ferry service should gain $1.5 million for improvements. Muir Woods stands to gain $5 million toward clean fuel vehicles.

Environmental improvements in the area stand to gain a potentially significant sum, with $170 million anticipated for various restoration projects as well as the likely replacement of the bridge to Muir Beach. As well, pilot programs for renewable energy, smart grid technology, and energy efficiencies stand to benefit significantly with federal allocations of $8 billion to be dedicated in those directions.
