The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, along with many more San Francisco organizations, is gearing up for the International Poetry Festival held July 24-26, 2009. The festival will feature poets from around the world and will host readings and performances in several different venues throughout the world. The festival has invited poets from many different walks of life as well as locations such as Iran, Syria, Haiti and Egypt. Each poet will recite original works and brings with them a unique experience and voice which can not be heard elsewhere.
A few of the voices a city tourist may hear throughout the 3 day festival are Roy Arad, Massram Al-Massri, Ferruccio Brugnaro and Georges Castera. During the event 26 poets from 21 countries will perform at several open-to-the-public venues. The current poet-in-residence of the San Francisco Public Library, Jack Hirschman, will perform with California's current poet laureate, Carol Muske Dukes, and San Francisco's poet laureate, Diane di Prima, as well as Paul Flores of 'Youth Speaks Out'. They will honor the late Lawrence Ferlinghetti veteran of the San Francisco North Beach Beat poet scene of the 1960's.
