San Francisco Gets Care-free and Car-free for Sunday Streets

Apr
17 2009

The success of San Francisco’s Sunday Streets last year has placed it in good stead and so to launch this year’s festivities the city is offering free bicycles, salsa dance lessons, and free yoga in the grassy knolls along the closed streets which will be dedicated to the pleasures of the carless streets.

This year’s schedule will expand on last year’s with six Sundays now dedicated to taking San Francisco tours along the waterfront embarcadero as you please, as long as it’s without motorized transportation. The waterfront program was such a success that the mayor has also approved similar closings on those days in four neighborhoods. People will be walking, biking, skateboarding, in-line skating, dancing, and while there will be plenty of activities for those who wish to do as they please, many gather to lounge under a shade tree and watch the world go by.

The start of this year’s Sunday Streets begins on April 26th, turning the streets into playgrounds for every age promoting a sense of community amongst the participants and a sense of being a kid again in many hearts and minds who get out and enjoy the simple pleasures of a being care-free in a car-free setting.
