San Francisco Cable Cars Ready For Upgrade

One of San Francisco's most popular tourists attractions, the San Francisco Cable Car system, will be closed between January and June 2011 for major track upgrades and equipment replacement. The classic city attraction is sorely in need of upgrades, which will begin with the California Street Line and eventually close all the cable car lines for several months. This work will be the first major upgrade the system has experienced since 1984 when the tracks were replaced.

Although the California Street line upgrade and closure has been scheduled, the system's other lines have not been assigned closure dates yet. While the cable car lines are closed, Muni will operate buses to transport passengers in lieu of the cable car. San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency has secured roughly $16 million for the upgrade through federal and city funds. Bids for the upgrade are expected to be received in April from contractors and the city is prepared to announce the winning bid later this year.
