San Francisco Attractions Get Boost From Art in Store Fronts

Mayor Gavin Newsom along with the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and the Office of Economic Workforce Development (OEWD) plan to launch a new series of community art projects aimed at revitalizing city tourist attractions that have been hard hit by the economic downturn. The program, Art in Store Fronts, engages San Francisco artists in the reinvention of vacant store fronts in some of the cities most popular neighborhoods. The pilot program was a huge success and included the Mission District, Central Market/Tenderloin and the Bayview neighborhoods.

Mayor Newsom stated “Since the launch, we have brought communities together, increased foot traffic in our commercial corridors and demonstrated how artists can play a role in promoting economic and community vibrancy. I can’t wait for the new storefront installations to take shape in Chinatown.” Although Chinatown is one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions, the neighborhood has felt the impact of the financial crisis. The Art in Store Fronts program has added culture and vibrancy to some of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions.
