The DeYoung Museum located in Golden Gate Park is a world renowned art museum housing multiple cultural and historical collections. The most recent collection assembled at the museum for permanent display in the Art of the America's galleries is entitled Yua Spirit of the Arctic: Eskimo and Inuit Art from the Collection of Thomas G. Fowler. The word yua reflects the Inuit and Eskimo idea that everything, even inanimate objects, possess a spirit or soul.
All works on display are gifts of the estate of the late Thomas G. Fowler, a talented artist, designer, collector and businessman. The comprehensive collection of Mr. Fowler represents his passion for art and culture. Nearly 100 objects will be on display dating from 3rd century B.C. to the modern era. Each object reflects both the functional necessity of arctic life as well as the visual aesthetics cherished by arctic people. Objects include figures, baskets, bowls, tools, pipes, boxes, snuff containers, snow goggles, kayak models, cribbage boards, animal carvings, dolls, and stone sculptures in a variety of materials, such as ivory, whalebone, walrus tusk, sea mammal intestine, wood, fiber and stone.
This exhibit opens August 28th with an opening reception and other festivities. This culturally historic art exhibit is a wonderful family friendly tourist attraction providing educational, cultural and historic context to an exciting San Francisco adventure.
