New Treasure Island Development May Be Threatened by Global Warming In Years To Come

Treasure Island

A new study put together by the California Natural Resources Agency states that “Sea levels have risen by as much as seven inches along the California coast over the last century, increasing erosion and pressure on the state’s infrastructure, water supplies and natural resources.” This fact could prove disastrous for the new 300-acre park, three hotels and 6,000 houses at market – and below-market – prices.

One of the major climate change challenges California is proposed to face in the next decades is a sea level rise which will threaten island off California's coast. Treasure Island is one of the island bodies that may be effected by the rise of ocean water. Eric Brooks, chair of the San Francisco Sustainability Working Group, Green Party hopes more research is done regarding climate change and the effects on new development in the San Francisco Bay before the $50 million dollar project begins. Most San Francisco officials agree that the LEED Certified design plan is an important step in the city's process of becoming a leader in sustainable building although many environmental scientists believe more research is necessary to ensure the large building project is created to withstand the future climate changes and challenges.
