The de Young Museum, located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, is preparing to host two joint exhibitions with the Musee d'Orsay, an art museum in Paris known for its Impressionist painting collection. While the Musee d'Orsay is under refurbishment for its 25th anniversary in 2011 the de Young Museum will host two special exhibitions, Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musee d'Orsay and Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Beyond Post-Impression Masterpieces from the Musee d'Orsay.
Both exhibitions will open in the spring of 2010 and remain open for eight months. San Francisco tourists can view over 100 paintings from the Musee d'Orsay's permanent collection including works by Degas, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec. John E. Buchanan, director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, states " These two exhibitions present a rare and unique opportunity for Americans to see the evolution and incubation of the Impressionist style from the collection of the most important repository of French 19th and early 20th century art — the Musée d’Orsay." This joint exhibition presents the public a rare opportunity to view some of the most important pieces of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art demonstrating the evolution of the era.
