Dashiell Hammett is certainly one of San Francisco’s most famous literary figures and in the pantheon of San Francisco’s contribution to the literary world, he may well be considered by many to be the chairman of the board. Irrefutably, he stands as the city’s greatest most significant mystery writer, having created such characters as the Continental Op and Sam Spade.
For more than thirty years San Franciscan Don Herron has been giving San Francisco tours focused on the world of Dashiell Hammett. The literary tour explores the characters and sites of relevance to his Hammett’s stories, and also highlights the locations where the writer once lived and the places where he worked as a detective. For about the same length of time that Don Herron has been giving the San Francisco tours, he has also been writing a guidebook compiling the relevant information found on his San Francisco city tours. This year in celebration of thirty years dedicated to the tour and guidebook, Don Herron has released a new book, "The Dashiell Hammett Tour: Thirtieth Anniversary Guidebook." Packed with photographs and location maps the book is intended to appeal to not only those with a fascination with Dashiell Hammett’s stories and characters, but also to those interested in background on the author himself and the connection between art and life.
