Litquake is an annual literary event held in San Francisco featuring readings by hundreds of authors, 80 events over nine days and a crowd expected to reach 12,000. This huge literary extravaganza began in 1999 as the pet project of 3 San Francisco writers interested in opening their books and minds to the public. On July 16th, 1999 Litstock took place in Golden Gate Park featuring 23 authors and a 200 person crowd.
On October 9th this year's annual Litquake event will begin with the Book Ball, an opening night event celebrating the social aspects of literature. Along with the Book Ball, Litquake will also host a number of other events such as Teenquake, an evening devoted to teen creativity, and the closing night Lit Crawl, a pub crawl style literary event hosted in 50 venues throughout the Mission. The Litquake team is planning on a possible expansion of the programs throughout the year as well as hosting events in different cities.
