On August 15, 2009 the newest addition to San Francisco's Japantown will officially open its doors to the public. New People is a 20,000 square foot contemporary building located at 1746 Post Street in San Francisco. This new space is destined to become a source for San Francisco residents and tourists to experience Japanese popular culture (J-Pop). The space has been designed as an outlet for both famous and up and coming J-Pop artists from multiple genres and artistic areas. New People is comprised of 3 floors and a basement which will house Japanese cinema, retail and art venues all under one roof.
The Grand Opening Celebration of New People will include a day of festivities including a fashion show featuring several Japanese clothing brands making their debut in the U.S., a film premiere, live art performances and mini concerts by some of Japans most popular punk and alternative bands. The events and performances will be located in the New People building and the adjacent Peace Plaza in Japantown. The celebration will also feature innovative companies from the Bay Area and Japan exhibiting unique products for sale as well as a food court featuring Japanese cuisine. This event begins at 11:00 am with a ribbon cutting and traditional Kagami-wari ceremony (breaking of a saki barrel for good luck) at the New People entrance located at 1746 Post Street.
