Haight Ashbury Street Fair

Jun
12 2009

The Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco is one of the most internationally celebrated neighborhoods in the city. The Haight Ashbury Street Fair is a non-profit organisation dedicated to celebrating the character, diversity and cultural history of the neighborhood. This celebration has been held for the last 28 years and was developed in response to the economic and residential spirit of the community in the mid 1970's. The group of merchants, activists and residents that initiated the event along with San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk developed the organization hoping that the day long community celebration would become a traditional city event.

Since the first event held April 30, 1978, the Haight Ashbury Street Fair has become a San Francisco cultural celebration. The event is held on the second weekend in June and includes two stages which have hosted a variety of performers such as Jefferson Starship/Airplane, Metallica and Noel Redding (The Jimi Hendrix Experience). The event has also become a popular showcase for up and coming artists and musical groups. Along with the musical performances will be artist and crafts vendors, food booths and many neighborhood businesses. This year the fair will be held on June 14th from 11am to 5:30pm located on Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco.
