Extranomical unveils first "Best San Francisco Pizza Tour"

May
06 2009

On March 24th, Extranomical Adventures debuted its first tour in a series of culinary tours, called “The Best San Francisco Pizza Tour”. This tour drove all around the city of San Francisco in search of the best slice of pizza around. Hotel concierges from all around the city jumped aboard the bus to find the perfect slice and ended up just loving all of it. The first stop on the tour was Arizmendi Bakery, which is a food co-op that is most widely known for its baked goods. Every day, they have a daily pizza special available for its customers to try. On the day of this tour, the daily special was a shiitake, portobello, and button mushroom pizza with a sesame-ginger-garlic vinaigrette, which gave it a unique and delicious Asian flair. Everyone agreed that Arizmendi had great flavor combinations. The next stop on “The Best San Francisco Pizza Tour” was Pauline’s Pizza, which is a special pizzeria because the owner grows all of her ingredients fresh in her Berkeley garden. Pauline’s also makes their own red house wine at their winery in Calaveras Creek, which everyone agreed was very good. The owner of Pauline’s Pizza, Sidney, gave a fun and informative history of the pizzeria and gave everyone some samples of their most popular pizza.  Participants were treated to pizza with interesting toppings, like Portuguese Linguisa sausage, fennel, basil, and sun-dried tomatoes. It was apparent just how fresh many of their ingredients are and they were also combined in inventive and delicious ways. The third and last pizzeria was called Pizzeria Delfina, which was again completely different from the previous two, though equally mouth-watering. At Pizzeria Delfina, the emphasis is on the traditional, Italian style of pizza with very simple ingredients, so that each flavor stands out. The crust was very thin, just like back in the Old Country and the toppings were bright and fresh. One especially good pizza was a traditional pizza with shaved parmesan, imported tomatoes, and a dash of cream.  It was gone in about two minutes, though it was piping hot. At the end of the tour, we tried to come to some sort of agreement on which pizzeria was the best, but we couldn’t reach a unanimous decision, since they were all so good and so different from each other. Pauline’s Pizza ended up winning in the category of overall taste by a small margin, but all of the pizzerias truly outdid themselves. Extranomical Tours hopes to offer this tour as a private pizza tasting tour to anyone who loves a good quality slice of Pizza.
