The annual Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia and has been listed as one of the top ten parades in the world by the International Festivals and Events Association. The parade is free and takes place February 27th beginning at 5:30 pm. This parade combines elements of a traditional Chinese Lantern Parade with elements of a Western-style street parade. The parade is over two and a half hours long and winds its way through San Francisco beginning at Market and Second Streets, proceeding west on Market and then west on Geary Street to to Union Square. It then turns north on Powell Street, east on Post Street and north on Kearny Street to Columbus Avenue, where the parade disperses.
It's suggested that parade spectators arrive no later than 4:45 pm to ensure a clear view of the parade from the sidewalk. Bleacher seats are available for purchase for $30.00 and located on Kearny Street for those interested; although, many spectators bring folding chairs and sit along the sidewalk as well. This parade goes on rain or shine, so be sure to dress warm and bring an extra umbrella. For more information regarding the Chinese New Year Parade please visit www.chineseparade.com.
