California Submits Bid for High Speed Train

Oct

California High Speed Rail System

The State of California has submitted a formal application to the Department of Transportation, in hopes of obtaining $4.7 billion in funding for a high speed rail system. California has already received approval of the voters for this massive transportation project, in the form of a $9.95 billion state bond passed in November.

Gov. Schwarzenegger has been a strong advocate of the high-speed rail. During a news conference the day the bid was placed, he stated: "You go to Europe and there's high-speed rail. Go to China, there's high-speed rail that goes 250 or 300 mph. In Japan, there's high-speed rail. And I've been on all these high-speed rails. That's why I'm such a fanatic about high-speed rail: because it's a great way to travel." A high speed rail system would create a fast and reliable option for long distance commuting for both residents and tourists. San Francisco and the greater Bay Area hope to experience a boost in tourism and the local economy from the construction of the rail system.
