Bay to Breakers, Racing Toward 100

May
16 2009

The annual ING Bay to Breakers 12k run is scheduled for this Sunday, May 17th. The race is one of the world's oldest and largest foot races held every year in San Francisco. Bay to Breakers was originally started in 1912 as a morale boosting event after the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Today the race is a world renown event with participants traveling from near and far to participate. Each year the race begins at the the northeast area of Downtown San Francisco near the Embarcadero journeys through the city and ends at Ocean Beach. Along with more than 65,000 participants, over 1,500 volunteers are involved in staffing the race as well as numerous city police and emergency personnel.

The tens of thousands of participants include world class athletes in addition to runners, joggers and walkers in costume. A San Francisco tourist can stand along side the course and witness elaborate costumes and wheeled floats pass by along with groups of elementary students walking to raise awareness for youth fitness. From avid, professional runners to fun loving groups dressed as Elvis, there is no shortage of excitement at the annual Bay to Breakers race!
