Bay Bridge Will Remain Closed

The Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge, which was closed on Tuesday evening after a steel beam and two tie rods fell onto oncoming traffic, will remain closed past the weekend. Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney refused to give an estimate of when the bridge will reopen, stating that "There's still a lot of work to be done," and adding that "commuters are going to have to check back with us."

To help commuters cope with the closure of the bridge, BART has extended its service. BART trains ran hourly overnight service during the Saturday Halloween night although overnight service on Sunday was not possible, as routine maintenance needed to be performed on the trains before Monday morning. BART spokesman Linton Johnson stated that ridership records were broken on Thursday when over 442,000 commuters used the trains.

Monday morning commuters are encouraged to continue using alternate routes including the San Mateo Bridge, San Rafael Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge and BART.
