Transportation officials closed the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge early Tuesday evening after 3 pieces of steel, weighing a total of more than 5,000 pounds, fell on the causeway. High winds and vibration are the most likely culprit of the fallen steel pieces which struck three vehicles during the incident but caused no serious injuries to the vehicles drivers. The steel pieces were repaired during an emergency service over the Labor Day 2009 weekend.
Commuters are using alternate routes to and from San Francisco including the San Mateo Bridge, San Rafael Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge and BART. BART service has added extra cars to the existing routes and has announced the possibility of extending service through the Halloween weekend.
Officials have announced that the repair will be complete Friday morning but the bridge will not open to traffic until the repair is tested. For more information regarding the Bay bridge closure please visit baybridgeinfo.org.
