Autumn Moon Festival in San Francisco

Aug
31 2009

The Autumn Moon Festival is a celebration of seasonal change and a chance to give thanks to a bountiful summer harvest. The Moon Festival is commonly celebrated in China and surrounding countries with a local bazaar, moon cakes and entertainment. This year San Francisco's Chinatown will celebrate the 19th annual Autumn Moon Festival with a bazaar on Grant Avenue from September 19th-20th, 2009. The street will be closed to automobile traffic from 11:00am-6:00pm while city tourists enjoy the shops, street vendors, food and entertainment.

Moon Festivals have been held in Asia for over 1000 years and are often equated with a 'Chinese Thanksgiving' which means a lot of food. The most sought after treat during the Autumn Moon Festivals is a moon cake which is a semi-sweet pastry filled with savory or sweet filling. The cakes resemble the moon's shape and are considered a holiday favorite among many Moon Festival participants. Although the lines to purchase moon cakes are very long during the festival, the treats are definitely worth the wait. The San Francisco Autumn Moon Festival is free to the public and a great experience for out of town visitors. For more information regarding the Autumn Moon Festival please visit www.moonfestival.org.
