One of the largest cycling events in the country will cruise through San Francisco for the second consecutive year, although the length of the city stretch will differ slightly. The Amgen Tour of California is an eight day cycling event celebrating its fifth annual race. The race will cover 800 miles beginning in Nevada City, California on May 16th and finishing in Los Angeles, California on May 23rd.
The San Francisco portion of the event is the third leg and will begin just north of Golden Gate Park on The Great Highway. This portion of the course is 113-miles and will be pedaled in neutral mode, which is a noncompetitive aspect of the event allowing fans to witness the race and protecting riders from congestion, for the first 2.2 miles. The race will pick up speed as the riders head towards Sloat Boulevard. Once out of San Francisco the riders will make their way to Half Moon Bay and finally to Santa Cruz. City tourists can expect to see Lance Armstrong, seven time Tour de France winner and Levi Leipheimer, three time defending Amgen champ and a local Bay Area resident.
