The America's Cup, the oldest sporting trophy in the world, will make its new home in San Francisco thanks to software billionaire Larry Ellison who won the America's Cup yacht race in Valencia, Spain earlier this month. The cup arrived in San Francisco February 19, 2010 and was welcomed by Mayor Gavin Newsom in a formal ceremony at City Hall. Mayor Newsom and Larry Ellison sat down after the ceremony to discuss the details regarding San Francisco hosting a defense of the America's Cup in four years time.
The most important decision city officials will have to make about the possible hosting of the race is the location of the actual event. Mayor Newsom listed several possible locations stretching from the Golden Gate Bridge to the southern water front including the Treasure Island, Fort Mason, pier 17 on the northern Embarcadero, Pier 30-32 near the Bay Bridge, Pier 48 south of AT&T Park , and Pier 80, a container ship pier at the end of Cesar Chavez Street. The city of San Francisco is very excited to have the opportunity to host such a prestigious and historic event.
