Alcatraz Island in San Francisco may invite visitors to experience an overnight adventure while exploring one of San Francisco’s most popular sightseeing attractions. The federal agency that oversees the island requested public feedback regarding the islands future which was part of a 20 year master plan for the entire Golden Gate National Recreational Area. The 20 year master plan also included environmental restoration as well as enhancing interest of major tourist attractions.
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area outlined three alternatives for the future of the island, which is a popular tourist destination that was formerly home to a military fortress, a maximum-security penitentiary and a Native American settlement. The public opinions result should be decided late next year and restoration should start in early 2011. For more information regarding Alcatraz Island please visit www.nps.gov/alca.
