The San Francisco Exploratorium's Exhibits in Motion

Mar
04 2009

The Exploratorium -a science museum of hands-on interactive exhibits, has had great success during its forty years at the often photographed, iconic landmark building, the Palace of Fine Arts, which resides between San Francisco's Marina neighborhood and the Presidio. In fact, it has done so well that the museum feels it has outgrown its current space and is in negotiations to make a move to two of the Embarcadero piers on San Francisco Bay at some point in the not too distant future where it will not only gain the desperately needed additional square footage, but will get the added benefit of outdoor space to create environmental exhibits as well. Parents who live in San Francisco as well as families visiting the city are likely thoroughly aware of the Exploratorium as it is a favorite of kids of all ages, and there are likely no other San Francisco attractions or San Francisco tours that provide as much entertainment and education as this popular spot.

As something of an interim opportunity, the Exploratorium will launch nineteen water and weather environmental exhibits outdoors at Fort Mason next week, March 13th, as a result of almost two million dollars in funding from the National Science Foundation. Examples of such are the wind vane pole that illustrates wind shear - layers of wind going in directions according to height, and a scope for viewing the elevation of the Golden Gate Bridge which fluctuates up to sixteen feet in height due to temperature changes. Fifteen displays are expected to be installed by the launch next week, with four more being added soon thereafter. Fort Mason, which is already a tourist Mecca due to its location on the waterfront looking out at Alcatraz, its exhibit facilities and grass fields for leisure activities, is pleased to announce the arrival of the Exploratorium exhibits so that visitors will have an even more pleasurable experience when visiting the national park.
