SFMOMA Prepares to Celebrate 75th Anniversary

Aug
11 2009

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announced the initial stages of the facilities for the 75th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for spring of 2010. The SFMOMA has been on the forefront of art collection and exhibition design for eight decades through grants, donation and purchases. The City of San Francisco has had the pleasure to watch the development of this art institution reach international stature and fame while simultaneously gaining a reputation as an educational and research facility.

The museum's 75th Anniversary will mark some of the most important exhibitions to pass through San Francisco. A few memorable gallery presentations were the organizing of Jackson Pollock's first solo exhibition in 1945 and hosting the first presentation of Judy Chicago's feminist opus The Dinner Party in 1979. Throughout the museum's existence the organizing board has challenged the conventional wisdom of what art museums should present and collect by establishing some of the first U.S. programs in film, architecture and design and media arts.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the most popular sight seeing attractions in the city and the 75th Anniversary Celebration is sure to be a memorable event. In January 2010 the museum will begin a series of 75th Anniversary events and exhibits that will give visitors an opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of the museum's vast collection. The year will also be marked by a special publication chronicling the museum's history and global impact.
