For the last decade the Skaggs Island Naval Station, which has been out of commission for a little over a decade is slated to become the newest addition to the San Pablo Bay Wildlife Refuge. The Naval Station is located in Sonoma County and lies along the San Pablo Bay Wildlife Refuge. The proposition would include handing over the 3,300-acre former Naval Station to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which manages the San Pablo Bay Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge spans Sonoma, Napa and Solano Counties and was created in 1974 to protect wintering and migratory birds. The possible agreement would restore the Naval Station to its natural habitat entailing demolition of several old buildings, roadways and military structures. If negotiations continue according to plans the former Naval Station will debut as the newest addition to the San Pablo Bay Wildlife refuge in early 2010. The proposed Skaggs Island addition will make a wonderful eco-tourism, wildlife and bird watching addition to Sonoma County tourism.
