Marine Mammal Center Releases Rehabilitated Sea Lions

Aug
20 2009

The Marine Mammal Center located in Sausalito rescued several sea lions a few months ago that were stranded near the 880 freeway in Oakland. The sea lions, ranging in age from one year to three years, were malnourished and lost. The Marine Mammal Center captured and transported all the animals to their new facility near Sausalito where the volunteers and staff rehabilitated the sea lions prior to their August release.

Once the sea lions were deemed suitable for release a group of staff loaded the animals onto a commercial fishing boat and set out for the Farallon Islands. The Farallon Islands are located 27 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge and are a perfect release point for the Marine Mammal Center's rescues. The islands are far enough from urban areas and close enough to the sea lion's favorite food source that the animals shouldn't have a problem feeding and staying safe.

The Marine Mammal Center has responded to 380 malnourished sea lion pups since January of this year and officials are unsure as to the cause of the strandings. This year is proving to be particularly busy for the staff and volunteers at the Marine Mammal Center which has never seen such a large number of stranded pups.
