Dia de los Muertos in San Francisco's Mission District

The holiday season in San Francisco is marked by the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony held every year in Union Plaza. This year will mark the 20th Annual tree lighting held in downtown San Francisco and will be just as memorable as last year's event. The Macy's Christmas Tree arrives unannounced by truck from Mount Shasta and is hoisted by crane into position in the middle of the square.

The preparation for the ceremony takes about a week to organize and passers by can view the tree in various states of decoration up until the evening of the ceremony. The official tree lighting ceremony takes place the day after Thanksgiving on November 27th at 6:00 pm. A tree light can be sponsored for $5.00 and the proceeds go towards the UCSF Children's Hospital. During the past six years over $800,000.00 has been raised for Compass Care, the pallative care program at the UCSF Children's Hospital.
